INJURED – 16 May 2012 – Matacucu Reef near Taveuni, Fiji – spearfisherman attacked

Tevita Naborisi, 20, was bitten on the right side of his head by an unidentified shark while spearfishing with a group at Matacucu Reef near Taveuni, Fiji.

The incident took place on May 16, 2012.

His cousin who was in the spearfishing group said Naborisi strayed from the rest of the group before the shark bit him.

“He had speared a donu when the shark attacked him from his right side,” his cousin is quoted as saying.

“The shark bit his head but he managed to fend the shark away.

“The shark had bitten into the right side of Tevita’s temple in the first attack. The shark came around a second time but Tevita managed to push the shark away.”

Naborisi swam 50 metres to the nearest man in the group who then called the boat which was another 50 metres away.

According to the report Naborisi was recovering at Waiyevo Hospital in Taveuni.

INJURED – 9 April 2011 – Malake island, Fiji – spearfisherman attacked

Atuate Caucau, 27, received minor wounds from a shark bite while spearfishing in waters of Malake Island, Fiji, on Saturday 9 April 2011.

The brief report in Fiji Times says he was treated at Rakiraki Hospital and released.

A police spokesperson said he was fortunate to not have been diving alone.

No other details were reported.

INJURED – 21 March 2011 – Udu, Vanua Levu, Fiji – diver attacked

shark attack victim in hospitalMereti Jeke, 30, had his left forearm amputated after is it was nearly bitten off by shark while he was diving for fish near Udu, Vanua Levu in Fiji. The attack happened on Monday 21 March 2011.

A brief report in Fiji Times said Jeke as admitted to Labasa Hospital where doctors surgically amputated his left forearm.

FATAL — 15 February 2010 ?? — Yadua Island, Fiji — diver attacked

A diver went missing after being attacked and dragged under the water by what wtinesses think was a shark. From the report it is unclear when exactly the attack happened. The report is dated Thursday 18 Feb 2010. It noted police on Yardua island, Fiji were told of the attack on Monday afternoon, which would have been the 15th of Feb.

According to the report:

Captain Kaukau Corrie said they watched helplessly as fellow diver, Henry Usimewa, 19, struggled and fought off an unseen creature before he was dragged beneath the waves.

Corrie said when they rushed to his aid less than half a minute later, Usimewa was nowhere to be seen.

“He was gone and all that was left behind was his diving gear,” he said.

“The boys dived in to look for him.”

 Usimewa, of Tabwewa Village in Rabi, was part of a group of seven divers working for High San Trading aboard the Grace Three. They dove for sucuwalu or beach-de-mer near Nara Reef, which is an hour’s boat ride from Yadua Island.

Four divers including the deceased were in the sea at the time of the attack.

“Around 9.30am we spotted him surface about 15 metres from the boat,” said Capt Corrie. “I can still hear his screams as he fought off something that pulled him under. It was terrifying.

“He was wearing his diving jacket but was pulled clean from it.

“We looked whole day and whole of Tuesday but we couldn’t find him except for his diving gear and sack of sucuwalu.

“We saw that his regulator hose had been bitten off. We are horrified and scared to dive in this area.”
