INJURED – 28 June 2011 – Aliwal Shoal, Rocky Bay, KwaZul-Natal, South Africa – scuba diver attacked

Paolo Stanchi is airlifted to hospital following a shark attack on the Aliwal Shoal, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Paolo Stanchi, a 22-year-old scuba diver from the United States suffered wounds to his left leg and both hands after he was bitten by a three-metre dusky shark while scuba diving on the Aliwal Shoal off the Rocky Bay coast, KwaZul-Natal, South Africa. According to the report he was watching a sardine run. The incident happened just after noon on Tuesday 28 June 2011.

The diver was part of a team of interns who had been diving with the underwater film company Blue Wilderness. A spokesperson said the diver owed his life to the film crew who managed to stem the bleeding quickly.

The diver was stabilised by paramedics before being airlifted to the Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban where he underwent surgery and was reportedly in a stable condition.
