When I turned the boat to go to him, I saw a shark lift him high out of the water.

Cefor Lewis, 35 suffered a large bite to his right mid calf from a shark attack while spearfishing between Providenciales and French Cay, Turks & Caicos, Caribbean Sea. The incident happened on Sunday 19 June 2011.

Lewis was with his brother who was in a boat. According to a report, they sailed up to French Cay at about 10am when Lewis jumped overboard to do some spearfishing.

His brother said Lewis wanted to shoot a shark and his brother warned him not to.

A few minutes later he resurfaced “yelling and screaming”.

“When I turned the boat to go to him, I saw a shark lift him high out of the water,” his brother said.

He said the shark was about 5 feet long – and not a tiger shark.

He pulled Lewis into the boat.

“There was a lot of blood. The only thing I could tell him was: ‘You’re a Christian man, you aren’t gonna be dead’,” he was quoted as saying.

It took about an hour to get back to Providenciales where an ambulance was waiting to take him to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for treatment. Doctors said he suffered considerable blood loss during the boat trip, but they managed to stabilise him with two units of blood. He underwent surgery to save his leg.
