INJURED – 16 March 2011 – Jimmy’s Beach, Nelson Bay, New South Wales, Australia – wakeboarder attacked
Lisa Mondy, 24, was attacked by a shark after falling during a wakeboarding session at Jimmy’s Beach, Nelson Bay, New South Wales, Australia – about 150km north of Sydney.
The attack happened on Wednesday 16 March 2011
She suffered serious injuries to her upper left arm, neck and head. The attacked is believed to be by a great white.
Her arm was nearly severed and after a 6-7 hour operation surgeons managed to reattach it.
Witnesses told media Mondy was dragged under the water, before being rescued by her boat crew and taken to the Nelson Bay public wharf, where she was stabilised by paramedics before being airlifted to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital.
Shark experts examined her wounds and bites to the life vest she was wearing and believe the shark “came from beneath the woman up through the water column” to make the attack, which is consistent with the attack pattern of a great white.
The hospital reported she was in a stable condition after surgery.
