POSSIBLY FATAL — 24 July 2010 — Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, California, US — Cardiff Kook attacked
The Cardiff Kook, a bronze statue of a surfer on Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, California, was swallowed whole by a huge great white in the early hours of Saturday morning, 24 July 2010.
According to a report in a San Diego online news site jokers erected a huge set of shark jaws around the statue. With teeth bared it looks set to swallow the statue whole.
Other witnesses to this tragic attack say they had noticed over the preceding few days a set of shark fins on the sidewalk that moved closer to the statue each day, as if preparing for the final awesome assault.
Who is behind it? No one is saying. But this in not the first time the Cardiff Kook has been made fun of – usually by dressing it with a tutu or something like that. The statue, actually called Magic Carpet Ride, was made by artist Matthew Antichevich, but is often the brunt of prankster humour because it looks like the surfer is still learning to surf – where it gets its name Kook.
