INJURED – 6 January 2010 – 2 miles of Elliot Key, Florida, US – spearfisherman attacked
A man (not named) was bitten on the arm by a shark while spearfishing from a boat some two and half miles off Elliot Key, Florida, US. The man speared a barracuda. When he tried retrieve it from the boat a shark leapt out of the water and bit him on the arm. The shark is believed to be a 4-metre bull shark.
The incident took place on 6 January 2010.
According to the report his fishing partner used a rope to make a tourniquet around his arm in the wetsuit. It took them 26 minutes to get back to shore during which time the man lost consciousness due to loss of blood. At shore he was rushed to hospital to undergo surgery for nerve and muscle tissue damage. His injuries were not expected to be life threatening.
