This is an update to the earlier brief report today. The man who was attacked by the bull shark is 32-year-old Anthony Segric. He was attacked while spear-fishing and was brought ashore at the boat ramp at Phil Foster Park, Riviera Beach, South Florida, US. The incident happened on Tuesday 26 April 2011.
Segric suffered a severe bite wound to the calf in the attack.
His friend spoke to media and was quoted as saying:
“He shot a fish and he was bringing the fish up it seemed like the shark went to go grab the fish and he missed it and got his leg.
“I think he was more ‘did it really get me’ or he didn’t know, because it happened like that and then he started to see a little bit of blood and that’s when he started screaming.”
Segric was taken out of the water and atourniquet was tied round his leg. He was taken to St Mary’s Trauma Center for surgery and was expected to survive.
“He was scared. Everybody was scared but we got it done,” his friend said.
