Swimmers at Second Beach, Port St Johns, South Africa – the day after the fatal shark attack.

Liya Sibili, 20, was killed by a shark while swimming at Second Beach, Port St Johns, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The incident took place on Christmas Day 25 December 2012.

The beach was crowded with holidaymakers for the Christmas vacation. A witness on the beach said he saw the shark swim among the bathers.

“People were trying to get out the water after the lifeguards spotted
something in the water. I saw the tail of something really big grab the boy, the water started boiling and later it went red,” he was quoted as saying.

According to press reports people refused to listen to lifeguards who asked them not to enter the water after the attack. They went back in regardless – while lifeguards continued to search for the body. It was not recovered.

Second Beach is now notorious for fatal shark attacks. There have been seven deadly attacks in the past 7 years. The two previous fatal shark attacks took place on 15 January 2012 (SharkAttackMonitor report) and 15 January 2011 (SharkAttackMonitor report).

There was no report of what type of shark it was and no other details were reported.

A 60-year-old man named only as Lorrin suffered minor injuries after being bitten on the left foot by a shark while surfing at Pakala’s on the west coast of Kauai, Hawaii. He estimated the shark to be around 10 feet.

The victim was taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.

No other details were reported.

He was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital with minor injuries, which did not require stitches.

According to other divers, the victim had a dead fish attached to his weight belt, which attracted the shark.

Thomas Floyd Kennedy recovers in a Maui hopsital after being bitten by shark while snorkelling

Thomas Floyd Kennedy, 61, was bitten on the thigh and lower left leg by a shark while snorkelling off Kihei, Maui, Hawaii. The incident happened around 9.40am about 250 metres offshore near Kihei.

The victim was treated on shore and taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

“Initially it didn’t hurt so much. It was mostly just fear of a second attack,” he was quoted as saying.

He said he was snorkelling with two others. They rode paddle boards to a spot more than 250 metres off the Kihei coastline.

Kennedy said he felt a tug and looked down to see his leg in the shark’s mouth.

“It released me. So I started swimming as fast as I could. I would guess I was a still a hundred yards from my board,” he said. “As I went further, I started to bleed. I could see a string of blood, which was my next concern.”

Crew from Wailea Canoe Club who were in the water at the time helped him to shore.

Kennedy and experts reckon it was 10 foot tiger shark that bit him.

Nuevo Altata, Sinaloa, Mexico

Lifeguard Fernando Cárdenas García, 32, died in hospital from his wounds after being attacked by a shark as he tried to free his rubber dingy which had become entangled in rope in high surf. He’d dived overboard to cut the rope when the shark bit him on the leg. The wound extended to his buttock and calf.

The incident occurred around 11.30am on November 22, 2012 off Nuevo Altata, Sinaloa, Mexico.

The lifeguard was rescued by his companions and taken to hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds.

Kai Rittgers recovers in hospital following a shark bite on his left foot.

Kai Rittgers, 14, suffered minor lacerations to his left foot after being bitten by a small shark while surfing off Melbourne Beach in Brevard County, Florida, USA. The incident happened 19 November 2012.

“It was like this sharp little pain, then I kind of sat up really quick and saw it was a shark,” Kai was quoted as saying.

He managed to paddle to shore. His dad took him to a doctor who bandaged the wounds. No stitches were needed.

Marcelino Riglos recovers in hospital after being bitten on the foot by a shark while spearfishing off Maui.

Marcelino Riglos, 30, was bitten on the foot by a 12-15 foot tiger shark while spearfishing with a friend in waters about 300 metres offshore of Waiehu Golf Course, Maui, Hawaii.

He was coming up for air when the shark clamped on his right foot and started shaking it from side to side.

“I started whacking it in the face with my hand,” he was quoted as saying. “My foot was dangling and blood was shooting all over the place.

“I thought I was going die out there. (It) was crazy.

With the help of his friend they tied a tourniquet with dive gear to stop the bleeding. They shed their floaters and spear guns, and swam back to shore which took a hair-raising 25 minutes.

He was taken to hospital where he received surgery for his wounds.

Dave Peterson of Maui shows off the bite mark from the shark attack on his SUP board

Dave Peterson, 55, had his board bitten by a shark while Stand-up Paddle Boarding off Kahana Beach Park, Maui, Hawaii. The incident happened at about 7.30 am on Thursday 18 October 2012 about 300 metres off shore.

Peterson said he was waiting for another wave when all of a sudden the shark hit his board and knocked him into the water.

He landed on the shark, hit it with his paddle, and pushed it away. He then crawled back up on his board and never saw it again.

He was quoted as saying: “I was actually mad because I thought it was a friend of mine pushing my board out from underneath me.”

Officials did not identify the shark but reckon it was about 6-8 feet long.

Peterson was not injured.

Details are a bit sketchy, but she is quoted as saying: “Shortly after I started bathing, I felt a sharp cut on my right leg and I screamed for help. The screaming drew the attention of my brethren who were also in the river and they came to my rescue.

“I was immediately taken to a nearby patent medicine shop, where I was given 12 stitches before I was later taken by my husband,  to a private clinic at Bomadi, for proper medical treatment.”

According to a report in Maui News the shark was estimated to be between 10 and 12 feet long, but the species was unknown.

The woman suffered non life-threatening injuries, including puncture wounds to her right inner thigh and lacerations to the front and back of her right hand from pushing the shark away.

The newspaper reported she was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
