Liya Sibili, 20, was killed by a shark while swimming at Second Beach, Port St Johns, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The incident took place on Christmas Day 25 December 2012.

The beach was crowded with holidaymakers for the Christmas vacation. A witness on the beach said he saw the shark swim among the bathers.

“People were trying to get out the water after the lifeguards spotted
something in the water. I saw the tail of something really big grab the boy, the water started boiling and later it went red,” he was quoted as saying.

According to press reports people refused to listen to lifeguards who asked them not to enter the water after the attack. They went back in regardless – while lifeguards continued to search for the body. It was not recovered.

Second Beach is now notorious for fatal shark attacks. There have been seven deadly attacks in the past 7 years. The two previous fatal shark attacks took place on 15 January 2012 (SharkAttackMonitor report) and 15 January 2011 (SharkAttackMonitor report).

There was no report of what type of shark it was and no other details were reported.

FATAL – 22 November 2012 — Nuevo Altata, Sinaloa, Mexico – lifeguard attacked

Lifeguard Fernando Cárdenas García, 32, died in hospital from his wounds after being attacked by a shark as he tried to free his rubber dingy which had become entangled in rope in high surf. He’d dived overboard to cut the rope when the shark bit him on the leg. The wound extended to his buttock and calf.

The incident occurred around 11.30am on November 22, 2012 off Nuevo Altata, Sinaloa, Mexico.

The lifeguard was rescued by his companions and taken to hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds.

INJURED – 10 October 2012 — Forcados River, Delta State, Nigeria – bather bitten

Torugbene-Ere Aboh, 38, was bitten on the leg by a shark while bathing in the Forcados River in Oboro Community, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.

Details are a bit sketchy, but she is quoted as saying: “Shortly after I started bathing, I felt a sharp cut on my right leg and I screamed for help. The screaming drew the attention of my brethren who were also in the river and they came to my rescue.

“I was immediately taken to a nearby patent medicine shop, where I was given 12 stitches before I was later taken by my husband,  to a private clinic at Bomadi, for proper medical treatment.”

No other details were reported.

INJURED — 27 October 2012 – Makena Landing Beach Park, Maui, Hawaii — swimmer bitten

A shark attacked a 51-year-old woman from California about 20 metres off Makena Landing Beach Park, Maui, Hawaii. The incident happened on Saturday 27 October 2012. The woman was not named in press reports.

According to a report in Maui News the shark was estimated to be between 10 and 12 feet long, but the species was unknown.

The woman suffered non life-threatening injuries, including puncture wounds to her right inner thigh and lacerations to the front and back of her right hand from pushing the shark away.

The newspaper reported she was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

INJURED – 8 September 2012 – 22nd Street, South Beach, Miami, USA – swimmer bitten

A swimmer (not identified) was bitten on the right knee while swimming in waters off 22nd Street, South Beach, Miami, Florida, USA.

He was treated at Florida’s Ryder Trauma Center.

A doctor at the centre said it was a “pretty significant bite. It went most of the circumference around his calf”.

No other details were reported.

INJURED – 15 August 2012 – Gulf Shores, Alabama, United States – swimmer bitten

A man (name not released) suffered minor lacerations to his leg from a shark bite while swimming near Gulf State Park Pier, Gulf Shores, Alabama. The incident happened around mid-morning Wednesday 15 August 2012. He was reportedly in waist deep water at the time of the attack.

He was treated at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley where he received stitches to close the wounds.

INJURED – 26 June 2012 – Kahana Beach, Maui, Hawaii – swimmer bitten

Sage St Clair suffered a small wound to her left calf from a shark bite at Kahana Beach, Maui, Hawaii

Sage St Clair, 16, suffered minor wounds to her leg from a shark bite while swimming at Kahana Beach, Maui, Hawaii. The incident happened at around 9.45 am on 26 June 2012 a short distance north of the surf spot called S-turns.

Sage suffered 10-12 cm gash to her left calf. Fire personnel treated the wound at the beach and her parents drove her to hospital.

She was sitting in shallow water when the shark bit her. The girl’s father was reportedly kneeling in the water next to her and felt something bump his lower back.

It is believed the shark was a small reef shark.

INJURED – 26 June 2012 — Juno Beach Pier, Jupiter, Florida, USA – swimmer attacked

Nickolaus Bieber is taken to hospital following a shark bite at Juno Beach, Florida, US.

Nickolaus Bieber, 6, was bitten on the thigh by shark while swimming in shallow water near Juno Beach Pier, Jupiter, Florida, USA. The incident happened on 26 June 2012.

A hospital spokesman said there was quite a large chunk bitten from the boy’s thigh.

“We’re guessing a shark, it’s a pretty big gash,” a bystander told 911 in an emergency call from the beach.

His mother pulled him out of the water after the bite. She wrapped a towel around the wound and a bystander called 911. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The boy told his mother he saw a shark thrashing, she told the press.

Nickolaus was reported to be recovering well following emergency surgery.

Another shark bite at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Wow. Another shark bite at Myrtle Beach. This makes it 6 in the past couple of weeks. On Tuesday 19 June 2012 a 16-year-old boy (name not reported) was bitten on the foot by a small shark while in waist deep water off Myrtle Beach (near 6th Ave.), South Carolina, USA.

Very little is reported on this except that his friend is quoted as saying ‘he was in pain and he couldn’t put any pressure on his foot’.

He was reportedly taken to hospital.

The girl’s name is Brooklyn Daniel. She was bitten on the left leg and required 140 stitches. – Can’t have been a small wound! She has been released from hospital and is expected to make a complete recovery.

A six-year-old girl (not named) was bitten on the leg by a shark while swimming off Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, USA. She suffered only minor puncture wounds to her leg. The girl was reportedly in shallow water when it happened.

Apparently the girl’s mother reported seeing a shark following a school of fish in the area.

No other details were reported.
