FATAL – 15 January 2011 – Second Beach, Port St Johns, Transkei, South Africa – surfer attacked
Zama Ndamase, 16, died from blood loss after being bitten on his left thigh by a shark while surfing at Second Beach, Port St Johns, Transkei, South Africa. The incident happened on Saturday 15 January 2011.
According to media reports a witness on the beach said he heard screaming and shouting and saw Zama splashing the water before he was pulled off his board.
“I saw the blood in the water and realised he had been attacked.”
“He somehow got back on the board and even managed to catch a wave almost to the beach, but was swept back out to sea by a rip current.
The other surfers in the water paddled frantically for the beach while other watched helplessly from the shore
Ndamase’s body was pulled from the water by lifeguards on a jetski.
According to reports he was a provincial surfer with a bright surfing future ahead of him.
His brother was quoted as saying: “My brother died doing something he loved best, and that was surfing.”
